Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions. It’s estimate that 19.1% of adults in the U.S. experienced an anxiety disorder in the past year, and more women experience anxiety than men.
CBD has broad therapeutic properties across a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, stemming from diverse central nervous system actions. In recent years, CBD has attracted increasing interest as a potential anxiolytic treatment. CBD has a broad pharmacological profile, including interactions with several receptors known to regulate fear and anxiety-related behaviors. Existing preclinical evidence strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders and reducing long term effects of stress. CBD interacts with the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R), the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, and other receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors.
Researchers found that 300–600 mg of CBD significantly reduced anxiety symptoms in 57 adult males. 300 mg showed most successful in dosage.
Studies have presented evidence that established CBD as an effective treatment for numerous types of anxiety disorders, including:
- generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- panic disorder (PD)
- obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

The VA San Diego Medical Center is conducting the first funded clinical trial of the effects of CBD with Veterans suffering from PTSD.

Animal studies have shown that CBD has a positive effect on serotonin levels in the brain, and serotonin. Low levels of serotonin are thought to play a key role in mood as well as pain.
